  • Description

A JOINT CHURCH AID ORGANISATION, MEETING IN STUTTGART, HAS DECIDED TO APPEAL TO THE UNITED NATIONS AND THE GOVERNMENTS CONCERNED FOR A CONTINUATION OF RELIEF FLIGHTS TO BIAFRA, FOLLOWING THE REPORTED COLLAPSE OF RESISTANCE BY BIAFRAN ARMED FORCES AGAINST FEDERAL NIGERIAN TROOPS. THE CHURCH AID ORGANISATION EXPRESSED CONCERN THAT IF RELIEF FLIGHTS WERE HALTED, THE RESULT WOULD BE A CATASTROPHE.

A SPOKESMAN FOR THE ORGANISATION, HERR LUDWIG GEISSEL, DIRECTOR OF A LUTHERAN RELIEF GROUP, SAID THAT JOINT CHURCH AID WOULD TRY TO HAVE THE AREA AROUND ULI AIRFIELD, IN CENTRAL BIAFRA, NEUTRALISED, SO THAT RELIEF FLIGHTS COULD CONTINUE.

HE SAID THOUSANDS OF BIAFRANS WOULD DIE IF JOINT CHURCH AID FLIGHTS WERE INTERRUPTED EVEN FOR ONLY A SHORT TIME.

ABOUT 600 TONS OF FOODSTUFFS WOULD HAVE TO BE FLOWN IN DAILY FOR THE SIX-MILLION REFUGEES, HE SAID.

HE QUOTED JOINT AID DOCTORS AS SAYING THAT THE RESISTANCE OF THE PEOPLE WAS SO LOW THAT A LARGE PROPORTION OF THE POPULATION WOULD NOT SURVIVE IF RELIEF FLIGHTS STOPPED.

ABOUT 400 PADRES, MISSIONARIES AND NUNS WERE STILL WORKING IN BIAFRA, HE SAID.
