CONTINUING HIS TOUR ABROAD FOR THE FIRST TIME AS CHANCELLOR, DR LUDWIG ERHARD, OF WEST GERMANY ARRIVED IN LONDON TODAY (WEDNESDAY), FOR A TWO-DAY VISIT. ALMOST IMMEDIATELY, HE OPENED A ROUND OF TALKS WITH SIR ALEC DOUGLAS-HOME, THE BRITISH PRIME MINISTER, WITH WHOM HE SPOKE ABOUT HIS CONSULTATIONS WITH PRESIDENT JOHNSON IN AMERICA.

IN A DAY FULL OF ENGAGEMENTS, DR ERHARD CALLED AT BUCKINGHAM PALACE TO SIGN THE QUEEN'S VISITORS' BOOK, AND AT CLARENCE HOUSE, THE QUEEN MOTHER'S HOME, TO SIGN THE BOOK THERE. BEFORE ATTENDING THE MANSION HOUSE LUNCHEON, HE AND HIS PARTY PAID A COURTESY CALL ON THE PRIME MINISTER AT 10 DOWNING STREET.

AT THE MANSION HOUSE, DR. ERHARD, SPEAKING IN GERMAN, SAID THAT IF EUROPE WAS TO PROSPER, SUCH PROSPERITY WOULD ONLY COME ABOUT BY CO-OPERATION WITH GREAT BRITAIN. HE WENT ON: "IF EUROPE IS TO PLAY ITS ROLE IN WORLD POLITICS AND MAKE ITS INFLUENCE FELT, THAT CAN ONLY BE BROUGHT ABOUT WHEN EUROPE ACTS AND WORKS AS ONE WHOLE IN A COMMUNITY OF FREE AND EQUALS."
THE FINAL SESSION WILL BE STAGED TOMORROW (THURSDAY), AND ARE EXPECTED TO DEAL WITH NATO, THE PROPOSED MIXED-MANNED NUCLEAR FORCE AND THE FORTHCOMING "KENNEDY ROUND" OF TALKS IN GATT.

DR ERHARD HAS TWO MEETINGS PLANNED WITH ANGLO-GERMAN GROUPS IN LONDON BEFORE LEAVING GATWICK AIRPORT FOR BONN.
