  • Description

EARLY THIS WEEK, A MAMMOTH PARADE MARKED THE SILVER JUBILEE OF QUEZON CITY - THE CAPITAL OF THE PHILIPPINES SINCE 1948. THE CELEBRATION OF THIS JUBILEE HAS BEEN GOING ON SINCE THE BEGINNING OF OCTOBER.

THE MAYOR OF QUEZON CITY, MR. NORBERTO AMORANTO, INSPECTED A GUARD OF HONOUR BEFORE WATCHING A MARCH PAST OF A MILITARY BAND, FLAG BEARERS AND TROOPS, WITH THE FORMER PRESIDENT OF THE PHILIPPINES AND LADY CARLOS GARCIA. THE CELEBRATION ENDED WITH A PROCESSION OF FLOATS AND THE INTRODUCTION OF MISS QUEZON CITY TO THE DIGNITARIES AND CROWDS.

QUEZON CITY WAS ENVISIONED BY THE GREAT FILIPINO LEADER, MANUEL L. QUEZON, AS A BUSTLING METROPOLIS, AND MORE SIGNIFICANTLY, A UNIVERSITY TOWN - THE CENTRE OF EDUCATION IN THE FAR EAST.

AS EARLY AS 1935, IMMEDIATELY AFTER HIS ELECTION AS FIRST PRESIDENT OF THE COMMONWEALTH, PRESIDENT QUEZON LAID THE FOUNDATION FOR ITS CONVERSION INTO A MODERN CITY AND AS THE SEAT OF LEARNING OF THE COUNTRY.

QUEZON CITY'S PROGRESS IS TREMENDOUS. WHAT WERE MOUNTAIN-SIDES OF RICEFIELDS ONLY A FEW YEARS AGO ARE NOW THE SITES OF HOMES, SCHOOLS, INDUSTRIAL CENTRES, AND HOUSING DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS.

ALTHOUGH FIVE TIMES LARGER THAN MANILA, IT HAS FOUR TIMES LESS INHABITANTS. ITS POPULATION WAS EXPANDED NEARLY 10 PER CENT IN THE LAST THREE YEARS FROM 397,990 TO 447,300. THERE ARE NOW OVER 61 SUPERMARKETS IN THE CITY AND IT OFFERS AN ENTIRELY FREE PUBLIC PRIMARY, ELEMENTARY, AND HIGH SCHOOL EDUCATION. IT MAINTAINS 43 ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS, FIVE HIGH SCHOOLS, AND HAS CONSTRUCTED A TOTAL OF 240 SCHOOL BUILDINGS.
