  • Description

MOHAMMED GAMMOUDI, THE TUNISIAN TITLE-HOLDER, WON THE 19TH INTERNATIONAL CROSS-COUNTRY RACE HELD IN RABAT, MOROCCO, ON SUNDAY (23 FEBRUARY). GAMMOUDI COVERED THE 10,250-METRE (6 1/4 MILES) COURSE IN 29 MINUTES 43 SECONDS.

SECOND WAS JADDOUR HAHHOU OF MOROCCO, ONLY FIVE SECONDS BEHIND, AND THIRD WAS AYACHI LABIDI OF TUNISIA. HE COMPLETED THE COURSE IN 29 MINUTES 50 SECONDS.

COUNTRIES REPRESENTED IN THE RACE INCLUDED MOROCCO, TUNISIA, ALGERIA AND LIBYA. MOROCCO WON THE TEAM EVENT WITH 11 POINTS, WITH ALGERIA SECOND WITH 22 POINTS. TUNISIA CAME THIRD WITH 25 POINTS, AND LIBYA FILLED FOURTH PLACE WITH 42 POINTS.

THE STANDARD OF COMPETITION WAS HIGH IN THIS YEAR'S RACE, AND GAMMOUDI WAS FORCED TO SHORTEN HIS WINNING TIME OF LAST YEAR TO TAKE FIRST PLACE. THE RUNNERS WERE BUNCHED CLOSELY TOGETHER THROUGHOUT THE GRUELLING RACE, ALTHOUGH GAMMOUDI WAS IN FRONT FOR MOST OF THE FINAL STAGE. HADDOU PUT ON A LAST BURST OF ENERGY ONLY TWO HUNDRED YARDS FROM THE FINISH, BUT HE WAS NOT ABLE TO OVERTAKE HIS MORE EXPERIENCED RIVAL.
