SPEECH (TRANSCRIPT) SEQ. 1: MUZOREWA: "The UANC and the South African government are in league to sabotage or overthrow our government and the accusation that UANC holds secret meetings are not only false, but the most preposterous rubbish of the highest degree. I want to repeat that these allegations are a heap of groundless lies, and I want and I am going to prove it to you with facts, indisputable facts that the Prime Minister himself, Mr. Robert G. Mugabe is aware of. After M. Mugabe, now our Prime Minister had emerged from the general elections as the victor, I personally as a democrat congratulated him in writing on his success in the election and on becoming the constitutionally elected leader of our nation. I did what I know is done in democratic and civilised countries, by democratic and mature leaders. I, my central committee, national executive and grass-roots representatives decided despite our defeat we would continue as a party to constitutionally and democratically organise and re-organise ourselves and act as a democratic government in waiting. The only logical explanation that comes to mind is that the Prime Minister and some of his ministers and party officials and members are desperately trying to incite ZANU-PF and UANC members to hate each other, to be suspicious an afraid of each other and consequently divide rather than unite the people."

Background: INTRODUCTION: Bishop Abel Muzorewa claims Prime Minister Robert Mugabe is seeking to destroy him politically and even threatens his life. The former Zimbabwe Prime Minister told a news conference in Salisbury on Wednesday (14 October) that he had and his United African National Council (U.A.N.C.) have been subjected to several powerful attacks by Mr. Mugabe and other government ministers. The ruling Zanu-Pf party describes the allegations as "alarmist, scurrilous nonsense." Bishop Muzorewa has also denied his party is plotting with South Africa to overthrow the Mugabe government.
