  • Description

The Australian government recently committed more than 2 million Australian dollars (1 million pounds starling) toward a road rehabilitation programme in West Kalimantan. The three main objectives of the programme are: a feasibility study to determine what road system is needed; a pilot construction project between Sanggau and Nyabang; and general support for the rehabilitation of roads.

Australian road-graders, bulldozers and a variety of other road construction machinery has been shipped via Singapore to the West Kalimantan region port of Pontianak and then by river barge to the port of Sanggau on the Kapuae river. Here the material was unloaded before being handed over to a team of Australian road construction exports who awaited its arrival. The Australian team will be working in co-operation with the Indonesian Department of Public Works.

SYNOPSIS: Because passable roads are almost non-existent in the West Kalimatan region of Borneo, Australian road building equipment had to be transported by river barge to its destination -- the port of Sanggau. The shipment was part of a recent commitment, by the Australian government, to provide more than two million dollars in aid toward a road rehabilitation programme in West Kalimatan. A pilot construction project between Sanggau and Nayabang is part of that programme.

Before arriving at Sanggau, the equipment had been shipped from Australia to Singapore, then on to the main West Kalamaten port of Pontianak for transhipment by barge.

Here at Sanggau, the equipment was unloaded and made ready for use. A team of Australian road building experts awaited its arrival. They will be working in co-operation with the Indonesian Department of Public Works. Part of the road rehabilitation programme will be to determine the most suitable road system for the region.
