  • Description

Thousands of dancing, cheering Africans turned out in the Highfields black township in Salisbury on Sunday (24 October) to send off part of Bishop Abel Muzorewa's delegation to the Geneva conference on Rhodesia.

SYNOPSIS: About 10,000 chanting Africans, giving Black Power salutes, heard Dr. Elliot Gabellah, vice-president of the Bishop's African National Council (ANC) faction promise them they would not be sold down the drain. Bishop Muzorewa himself let Rhodesia several days ago for meetings in neighbouring black states before going on to Geneva. Other members of his delegation who live in exile, met him in Geneva yesterday.

Banners carried by the crowd said the Geneva talks would lead Zimbabwe-Rhodesia-to a peaceful land, but one said "Talks or no talks, the gun will solve." The Geneva conference is being held to try to negotiate an interim government for the rebel British colony in preparation for legal independence and majority rule.

Black and white police watched over the crowd and there wee no incidents reported. Other banners called for Rhodesia's key ministries of defence and law and order to be in black hands under the interim government.

Dr. Gabellah told his supporters to maintain discipline because a future black government would need the same police to look after them. Prime Minister Mr. Ian Smith has strongly opposed any moves to have the police and defence fores under a black minister.

As well ad Dr. Gabellah, the delegation included Dr. Gordon Chavunduka, the Reverend Max Chigwida, Mr. J.B. Cohen and Dr. Ahrn Palley. Mr. Cohen is a coloured (mixed race) delegate and Mr. Palley a white legal adviser to the team.
