Background: The Royal yacht, Britannia, docked at Fremantle with the Royal couple on board for the final stage of their Australian tour.Thousands of people at the dockside cheered as the Queen was welcomed by the Governor, Sir Charles Gairdner, and Lady Gairdner.

Their arrival in Fremantle marked the end of ten days travelling in the Australian outback and down the long lonely coast of Western Australian.Cheering people lined the 13 miles of the Royal progress route to Perth.

Shortly before the Royal progress was due in Perth, some pranksters staged a rehearsal of the event.

The crowds enjoyed the diversion, but the police were not amused.

There was another incident outside Perth's new council house which the Queen was to open.Private Maxine James collapsed while waiting to open one of the car doors. The Lord Mayor, Sir Harry Howard, met the Queen outside the council building.

The Queen unveiled a plaque commemorating her visit and the opening of the building. The plaque depicts two black swans supporting a crown.

While in Perth, the Royal couple also visited the University of Western Australia. The Queen officially opened the University's Jubilee Year.
