  • Description

The Chilean President, Salvador Allende, has been having talks in Moscow with the Soviet leaders.

The President -- leader of the world's first popularly elected Marxist government -- arrived in Moscow from Algeria on Wednesday (6 Dec) and was welcomed at the airport by President Nikolai Podgorny, Prime Minister Alexei Kosygin and other officials.

Their first formal meeting took place shortly after wards at the Kremlin.

President Allende and the Soviet leadership were later reported to have reached "a complete identity of views" on ways of developing co-operation between Chile and the Soviet Union. Tass Newsagency said they discussed the expansion of economic, scientific an technical relations. International problems also came up and, according to Tass, there was a complete identity of views there, too.

One of the reasons for President Allende's trip was believed to be to seek Soviet support and investment in developing projects, enabling his to reduce the influence of big American-based corporations on his economy. he made an attack on such corporations in a speech before the Untied Nations earlier this week, and followed it up with remarks at a function in Moscow. On the latter occasion, he said Chile was living through "a silent Vietnam" due to aggression by giant corporations.
