  • Description

Several policemen and young people were injured, and scores of arrests made as the result of a clash between a group of young radicals and police at a weekend rock festival in Toronto, Canada.

Thousands of young people from nearly every Canadian state and province - many without enough money to buy even a bottle of soft drink - crowded around Toronto's Canadian National Exhibition stadium unable to pay the sixteen dollar (approx GBP 6.0.0 sterling) admission for the two day festival.

More than three hundred policemen stood on guard outside the stadium gates to prevent a mass gate crashing, a crash promised by a group of young radicals calling themselves the Fourth of May movement, against the high admission prices.

Inside the stadium, thousands of rock fans, who had the money to get in, listened to the concert until the action shifted to the rear of the stadium with the first attempts to crash the gate.

After the first daring few made their jump the big crowd surged towards the gates. Police on horseback moved in and were greeted by firecrackers and stones hurled by the crowd. Police lashed out at the jeering demonstrators with riding crops and sticks amid cries of "kill the pigs Several of the fifteen-hundred demonstrators who crashed the gates were injured. So too were some of the police guards.

The demonstration cooled down when the promoters agreed to a police request to send some entertainers to a nearby park to play free of charge. But the Fourth of May leaders were not content with that ruling and say they will go on crashing when the festival moves to Winnipeg and Calgary, until all the music is played free.
