    Background: CHILDREN FROM THIRTEEN COUNTRIES TOOK PART IN THE 4TH INTERNATIONAL SCHOLAR CUP ROAD SAFETY RALLY IN DENMARK YESTERDAY (THURSDAY).

    CHILDREN FROM BELGIUM, FRANCE, HOLLAND, ITALY, JAPAN, NORWAY, SPAIN, SWITZERLAND, SWEDEN, WEST GERMANY, AUSTRALIA AND DENMARK TOOK PART IN THE RALLY WHICH IS AIMED AT PROMOTING A HIGH STANDARD OF ROAD SAFETY AMONGST CHILDREN RIGHT FROM THE AGE THEY BEGIN SCHOOL.

    DURING THE RALLY, THE CHILDREN UNDERGO A NUMBER OF THEORITICAL AND PRACTICAL TESTS WHICH REFER TO THE TRAFFIC REGULATIONS OF THE CHILD'S OWN COUNTRY AND SOMETIMES TO TRAFFIC REGULATIONS OF OTHER COUNTRIES. THE PRACTICAL TESTS ARE TAKEN ON BICYCLES AND PEDAL CARS ON A SPECIALLY LAID OUT ROAD SYSTEM COMPLETE WITH TRAFFIC LIGHTS, PEDESTRIAN CROSSINGS AND ROAD SIGNS.

    MANY OF TODAY'S CHILDREN WILL BECOME TOMORROW'S DRIVERS AND BY TEACHING THEM ROAD SAFETY AT AN EARLY AGE IT IS HOPED TO REDUCE THE ROAD ACCIDENTS. EACH DAY THROUGHOUT THE WORLD A THOUSAND PEOPLE ARE KILLED AND CASUALTIES AMOUNT TO FOUR MILLION PEOPLE INJURED EACH YEAR.
