    AT A HOSPITAL IN CAN THO, IN THE MEKONG DELTA, SOME OF THE 139 RIVERSIDE PEOPLE ARE BEING NURSED BACK TO HEALTH FOLLOWING AN ALLEGED AMERICAN SECRET FLAME THROWER ACCIDENT ON THURSDAY.

    THE INCIDENT REPORTED TO HAVE CLAIMED 35 LIVES -- 34 CIVILIANS AND ONE SOLDIER.

    AN AMERICAN MILITARY SPOKESMAN SAID THE FLAME THROWER ACCIDENTALLY SET ABLAZE MORE THAN 250 RIVERSIDE HOMES IN THE MEKONG DELTA WHEN AMERICAN NAVY SUPPLY BOATS CARRYING AMMUNITION AND ARTILLERY WERE AMBUSHED BY THE VIET CONG.

    AMERICAN TROOPS REPLIED WITH FLAME THROWERS, DETAILS OF WHICH STILL ON THE SECRET LIST.

    SOME 280,000 PIASTRES (ABOUT 1,000 STERLING) WAS DISTRIBUTED TO THE WOUNDED AND BEREAVED AS A GESTURE OF REGRET. MORE MONEY AND BUILDING MATERIALS MAY BE DISTRIBUTED TO THE HOMELESS LATER.
