  • Description

The Egyptian Vice-president, Hosni Mubarak, met French President Giscard D'Estaing on Friday (15 June) for talks on the Israeli-Egyptian peace agreement. He said after the meeting that the Egyptian and French positions on the peace efforts were vary close.

SYNOPSIS: Vice-President Mubarak arrived in Paris after a stop-over in London where he met the new British Prime Minister, Mrs Thatcher. Earlier, in the week, he'd been in Washington to hand president Carter a personal message from President Sadat.

After the hour-long meeting, Mr. Mubarak told newsmen that he and the French President had exchanged views on the current moves aimed at full autonomy for the West Bank and Gaza. Mr Mubarak revealed that President Sadat will attend the African summit in Monrovia in July in an effort to seek African support for the Egyptian peace policy. He also told newsmen that peace would come to the Middle East only when there was a solution to what he called "the Palestinian problem", and he added that France would continue to supply arms to Egypt.

The Vice-President said he hoped to visit the Paris Air Show while in the French capital. When asked if he would visit the Israeli pavilion he answered, 'Yes, why not?"
