  • Description

BRITAIN'S FIFTY-THOUSAND TON AIRCRAFT CARRIER, HMS EAGLE, WITH 3,000 OFFICERS AND MEN ON BOARD AND CARRYING A VARIETY OF MISSILES AND AIRCRAFT, ARRIVED IN SINGAPORE ON THE EVENING OF JANUARY 13.

HER ARRIVAL GIVES A TREMENDOUS BOOST TO THE BRITISH NAVAL FORCES IN THE FAR EAST WHICH IS DESCRIBED AS THE MOST POWERFUL ASSEMBLED IN THIS THEATRE SINCE THE KOREAN WAR.

ALTHOUGH THE HMS EAGLE WAS LAUNCHED IN 1946 SHE WAS NOT ACCEPTED INTO SERVICE WITH THE ROYAL NAVY UNTIL 1952. SHE IS OPERATED BY CONVENTIONAL PROPULSION EQUIPMENT HAVING EIGHT BOILERS WITH ASSOCIATED STEAM TURBINES DRIVING FOUR SHAFTS GIVING A SPEED OF APPROXIMATELY 30 KNOTS. THE WHOLE MACHINERY IS CAPABLE OF BEING REMOTELY OPERATED FROM THE MACHINERY CONTROL ROOM.

THE EAGLE IS ONE OF THE FEW BRITISH SHIPS EQUIPPED WITH ACTION DATA AUTOMATION FOR HITTING HIGH-SPEED TARGETS; AND IT'S THE ONLY SURFACE VESSEL IN THE ROYAL NAVY EQUIPPED WITH SHIPS INTERNAL NAVIGATIONAL SYSTEM (SIS) DESIGNED TO STEER SUBMARINES WITHOUT THE AID OF THE SUN AND STARS.

THE ARRIVAL OF THE EAGLE COMPLETES THE NAVAL BUILD-UP IN SINGAPORE WHICH BRITAIN BEGAN FOLLOWING INDONESIA'S INTENSIFICATION OF HER CONFRONTATION OF MALAYSIA.
