  • Description

Chen Chao-yuan, China's first Ambassador to India in nearly 14 years, is due to present his credentials in New Delhi shortly (17 September).

SYNOPSIS: The Chinese Ambassador arrived in the Indian capital on Friday (10 September). He was greeted by India's Chief of Protocol, Mr. Chowdhary, Chinese Embassy officials and a number of people from the India-China Friendship Association. Mr. Chen's arrival in New Delhi came two months after India's first ambassador to China since 1962 took up his post in Peking. The exchange of ambassadors between the two countries marked a normalisation of relations, which had been strained by a border war 14 years ago.

Mr. Chen told newsmen in the airport's V.I.P. lounge that the setbacks of the past 14 years constituted only a short page in the long history of friendship between the Chinese and Indian peoples. He said China was happy to note that the normalisation of Sino-Indian relations had been achieved through the efforts of both sides. The Chinese Ambassador expressed confidence that the friendship now existing between the two countries would grow even further.
