Indonesian President Soekarno arrived in New Delhi today by special plane from Calcutta on a three-day visit. It is the first major stop on his Afro-Asian tour.
Accompanied by his Foreign Minister Dr. Subandrio, he was greeted by Dr. Rajendra Prasa, I "dia's President, Mr Nehru, Prime Minister, Dr. Radhakrishinan, Cabinet ministers and other high officials.
Dr. Soekarno is believed seeking to intensify Afro-Asian support for his campaign against the Dutch in Indonesia. His six-week tour is officially called a rest and health trip. India sympathises with Indonesia's efforts to reduce its dependence upon foreign, mainly Dutch, business holdings and supports Indonesia's claim to West New Guinea (West Irian).
India, however, is nervous about the effect Indonesia's actions may have on foreign aid and investments to the rest of Asia. Prime Minister Nehru reportedly has urged Indonesia to use moderation in its anti-Dutch campaign.
Dr. Soekarno is scheduled to fly to Bombay on Thursday for a two-day visit before going on to Cairo. Other points on his tour include Pakistan, Burma, Thailand and Japan.
