Beards abound in Fredriksund. The Lord Mayor has a beard, the clerk behind the desk....the butcher, the baker, the local painter. Of the total of 1,200 men between the ages of 20 and 70 in this small Danish town, nearly all sport beards.
Reason for this spats of stubble rests in a myth -- a tale from Viking mythology that Fredriksund will be presenting in pageant from throughout this summer. Most of the town's male population has been mobilised for the Viking play which they hope will draw thousands of tourists. Rehearsals are now well under way under the strong hand of a local (and bearded) director and each evening after work the streets are resplendent with the sight of Viking-clad cyclists, motor-cyclists and pedestrians, making their way to the open-air stage.
Each pageant performance will call upon 350 of the bearded Vikings. Reserves with full sets are standing by to replace those who go on holiday. All are acting as amateurs, for the whole of the proceeds are going to local sports organizations and to the welfare of the town's old folk.
Hurrah, say the pensioners, for the charitable boards of Fredriksund.
