  • Description

THE SOVIET UNION'S "SPACE DOGS" - BLACKY AND BREEZY -- WERE REPORTED TODAY (FRIDAY) TO SHOW NO ILL EFFECTS CAUSED BY COSMIC RADIATION DURING THEIR RECENT 22-DAY FLIGHT. THE DOGS, WHICH HAVE NOW APPEARED ON RUSSIAN TELEVISION, ORBITED IN AND OUT OF THE DANGEROUS VAN ALLEN RADIATION BELTS 560 MILES (900 KMS) ABOVE THE EARTH -- HIGHER THAN ANY MANNED FLIGHT.

BLACKY AND BREEZY WERE TAKEN TO MOSCOW YESTERDAY FROM THEIR LANDING PLACE, BELIEVED TO BE SOMEWHERE IN SOVIET CENTRAL ASIA. SOVIET SCIENTISTS, NOW STUDYING HEALTH OF THE DOGS, SAY THAT PRELIMINARY RESULTS SHOW THAT DATA OBTAINED WOULD SUBSTANTIALLY HELP TO ASSESS RADIATION CONDITIONS ON SPACE FLIGHTS. DIRECT INFORMATION ON THE EFFECTS OF RADIATION ON LIVING ORGANISM IS ESSENTIAL FOR ANY FURTHER EXPLORATION OF OUTER SPACE.
