Background: Delegates to the Third International Conference on Industrial Civil Defence on Thursday (10 April) watched fire-fighting and civil defence teams being put through their paces at Beirut's civil aviation training ground.
Old tanks were set alight to represent the fuselage of a crashed jumbo jet. Asbestos-suited firefighters rushed to the scene and pumped flame-quelling foam onto the "crash".
Next it was the turn of first-aid teams who administered help to the volunteer "victims".
Emergency treatment was administered on the spot and then the "casualties" were taken away by ambulance. To help further the realism of the exercise, a helicopter was called in to fly the worst "cases" to hospital.
