  • Description

A colourful parade, with music and dancing and a carnival atmosphere greeted the 13th anniversary of Ivory Coast independence in the capital, Abidjan, on Tuesday (7 August).

The ceremonies were presided over by President Felix Houphouet-Boigny, the chief of state of the West African state since its independence from France in 1960. The country has been one of the most stable in West Africa and has enjoyed unprecedented development since then.

Native dancers entertained the official party during the celebrations and a gala parade had contingents of the armed forces, Ivory Coast schoolchildren and members of the League of Women of the Ivory Coast.

People dressed in traditional costumes in honour of the day and the two-hour parade brought with it a full-scale carnival to continue the celebrations far into the night.

No official delegations were invited from other African states, as the Ivory Coast government said the celebrations was to be a "family affair."
SYNOPSIS: It was an occasion of gaiety and celebration on Tuesday as the Ivory Coast celebrated its thirteenth anniversary of independence.

Presiding over the celebrations was President Felix Houphoust-Boigny, who has ruled the country since it became independent in 1960.

Huge crowds gathered along the main streets to see the dancing and the two-hour parade through the streets of Abidjan. Besides the colourful native dancers, the crowds saw a march-past by units of the Ivory Coast armed forces.

And schoolchildren and members of the League of Ivory Coast women took their places in the streets as part of the celebration.

No official delegations were invited from other African states for the celebrations -- the President spoke for the government in saying the independence day gala was to be a family affair. For the first time, the colourful costumes of the parade were broadcasts by colour television, as colour transmission was inaugurated in honour of the day. The festive celebration was carried far into the night with a full-scale carnival.
