  • Description

The first Israeli prisoners of war to be repatriated from Syria returned home on Saturday (1 June) to a tumultujous welcome at the Ben Gurion Airport, after a ninety minute flight from Damascus.

There were no stretcher cases amongst the twelve Israelis who told reporters they had been well treated by the Syrians. A number were wearing artificial limbs fitted by Syrian doctors.

The prisoners were welcomed at the airport by the Israeli Defence Minister, General Dayan, and the Foreign Minister, Mr. Abba Eban, as well as hundreds of relatives.

They were then taken by ambulance to the Tel Hashomer Hospital where doctors gave them preliminary examinations before allowing them to rejoin their families.

Following is a transcript of an interview with Dr. Mordekhai Shani at Tel Hashomer Hospital:
SYNOPSIS: To ease their return to freedom the men were given pocket money and a small booklet bringing them up to date with world events since their imprisonment eight months ago.

At the hospital reporters asked Dr. Mordekhai Shani about the prisoners' medical condition.

Saturday's repatriation of prisoners was only the first. Over the next week the Syrians are pledged under the disengagement agreement to release a further sixty-eight.
