  • Description

JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI, FORMERLY ONE OF THE STRONGHOLDS OF SEGREGATION IN THE UNITED STATES, IS SHOWING LITTLE RESISTANCE TO THE CIVIL RIGHTS BILL THAT CAME INTO LAW LAST WEEK.

ON SUNDAY SEVERAL NEGROES SUCCESSFULLY REGISTERED AT TWO HOTELS WHICH HAD PREVIOUSLY BEEN FOR WHITE CUSTOMERS ONLY. THE NEGROES, MEMBERS OF THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF COLOUPED PEOPLE, REGISTERED IN ONE OF THE MOST FASHIONABLE HOTELS IN THE CITY. THERE WERE NO DEMONSTRATIONS AS THEY REGISTERED. THEY SPENT THE NIGHT THERE, AND ATE AT THE HOTEL'S RESTAURANT.

THE BARRIERS TO JACKSON'S PUBLIC ACCOMMODATION FELL FOR THE FIRST TIME ON SUNDAY WHEN A MOTEL ALLOWED A NEGRO TO EAT AT A PREVIOUSLY ALL-WHITE RESTAURANT. THE FOLLOWING DAY, THE SAME MOTEL ALLOWED NEGROES TO SAY OVERNIGHT.

AFTER THEIR STAY IN THE HOTEL, THE NEGROES SPOKE TO REPORTERS ABOUT THEIR TREATMENT.
