MR. SMITH WAS SPEAKING AT AN AGRICULTURAL SHOW AT UMTALI, ABOUT 170 MILES (272 KILOMETRES) EAST OF SALISBURY. THE SAME MORNING TWO BRITISH OFFICIALS ARRIVED IN SALISBURY TO RESUME EXPLORATORY TALKS.

    SPEAKING AT UMTALI LESS THAN THREE HOURS AFTER THE BRITISH TEAM HAD ARRIVED IN SALISBURY MR. SMITH SAID:
    THE BRITISH OFFICIALS WHO ARRIVED WERE THE LEADER OF THE BRITISH GROUP, MR. DUNCAN WATSON, ASSISTANT UNDER-SECRETARY FOR COMMONWEALTH AFFAIRS, AND MR. OLIVER WRIGHT, BRITISH AMBASSADOR-DESIGNATE TO DENMARK.

    THEY WERE MET AT THE AIRPORT BY MR. JOHN HEMMINGS, THE HEAD OF THE BRITISH MISSION IN RHODESIA WHO WILL MAKE UP THEIR TEAM, AND MR. GERALD CLARK, THE SECRETARY OF THE RHODESIAN CABINET, WHO IS A MEMBER OF THE RHODESIAN TEAM OF OFFICIALS.
