    THE IVORY COAST MINISTER OF PLANNING, M. MOHAMED DIAWARA, ON MONDAY (20 FEBRUARY) LAID THE FOUNDATION STONE OF A NEW THERMAL ELECTRICITY GENERATING PLANT AT VRIDI EIGHT MILES (13 KILOMETRES) SOUTH OF THE CAPITAL, ABIDJAN.

    THE NEW POWER PLANT IS MIDWAY ALONG THE CANAL THAT LINKS THE PORT OF ABIDJAN WITH THE ATLANTIC. IT WILL TAKE TWO YEARS TO BUILD AND COST ALMOST GBP3 MILLION. WITH AN INITIAL CAPACITY OF 32,000 KILOWATTS PER HOUR, IT WILL BRING ELECTRIC POWER TO SOME RURAL AREAS OF THE IVORY COAST FOR THE FIRST TIME.

    IN A SPEECH BEFORE THE FOUNDATION LAYING CEREMONY, M. DIAWARA SPOKE OF THE ENORMOUS INCREASE IN THE DEMAND FOR ELECTRICITY IN THE IVORY COAST IN THE PAST TEN YEARS. HE ADDED THAT IT WOULD CONTINUE TO RISE, MULTIPLYING FOUR TIMES BY 1975.

    THEN CAME THE LAYING OF THE FOUNDATION STONE, WITH A SCROLL IN A COPPER CONTAINER SEALED INTO IT.
