  • Description

SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL, BRITAIN'S 90-YEAR-OLD WARTIME LEADER, IS GRAVELY ILL IN LONDON AFTER SUFFERING A STROKE. A BULLETIN LAST NIGHT (FRIDAY) SAID HE WAS "SLIPPING INTO DEEPER SLEEP."
NEWS OF THE ELDER STATESMAN'S ILLNESS CAME YESTERDAY AFTERNOON. REPORTERS AND CAMERA CREWS CROWDED OUTSIDE SIR WINSTON'S HOME IN HYDE PARK GATE, A QUIET STREET IN THE SUBURB OF KENSINGTON. AN EARLY CALLER WAS LORD MORAN, WHO HAS LOOKED AFTER SIR WINSTON'S HEALTH FOR MANY YEARS. THE GRAVITY OF THE ILLNESS WAS LEARNED FROM AN AFTERNOON BULLETIN SIGNED BY LORD MORAN AND THE NEUROLOGIST, LORD BRAINE. LORD MORAN READ IT TO REPORTERS HIMSELF:-
IT WAS JUST BEFORE TEN O'CLOCK THAT NIGHT WHEN LORD MORAN EMERGED FROM SIR WINSTON'S HOME TO GIVE THE SECOND BULLETIN. THERE WAS LITTLE CHANGE, HE SAID. SIR WINSTON WAS SLIPPING INTO DEEPER SLEEP AND WAS NOT CONSCIOUS OF PAIN OR DISCOMFORT. REPORTERS ASKED HIM IF HE THOUGHT SIR WINSTON WOULD RECOVER. LORD MORAN REPLIED: "I DON'T THINK I'M GOING TO ANSWER THAT." FROM THE CROWD OF HUNDREDS KEEPING A VIGIL CAME CALLS TO LORD MORAN OF "HOW IS HE?" ANOTHER BULLETIN IS TO BE ISSUED AT NOON TODAY."
MR HAROLD WILSON, BRITAIN'S FIRST LABOUR PRIME MINISTER SINCE MR CLEMENT ATTLEE'S DEFEAT BY SIR WINSTON IN 1951, WAS AMONG THE MANY CALLERS. HE SPENT 20 MINUTES WITH MEMBERS OF THE HOUSEHOLD TO EXPRESS HIS PERSONAL CONCERN. HE SAID AFTERWARDS: "I DON'T THINK I'D BETTER SAY ANYTHING TONIGHT."
THERE WAS A HUSHED SILENCE AS OTHER FRIENDS AND MEMBERS OF SIR WINSTON'S FAMILY HURRIED INSIDE. THE SILENT CROWD SYMBOLISED THE WHOLE NATION'S SHOCK AND ANXIETY OVER THE ILLNESS -- JUST SIX WEEKS AFTER CROWDS HAD SANG "FOR HE'S A JOLLY GOOD FELLOW" ON SIR WINSTON'S 90TH BIRTHDAY.

A STEADY STREAM OF WELL-WISHES DROPPED BY THROUGHOUT THE AFTERNOON TO HAND IN FLOWERS AND GIFTS. TELEGRAMS POURED IN. EXPRESSIONS OF SORROW AND CONCERN WERE VOICED ALL OVER THE WORLD.

SIR WINSTON'S DAUGHTER, THE ACTRESS SARAH CHURCHILL, MADE AN AIR DASH FROM ROME TO BE NEAR HER FATHER. HOWEVER, HER AIRCRAFT DEVELOPED A TECHNICAL FAULT AND HAD TO TURN BACK. AFTER A SIX-HOUR DELAY, SHE FINALLY ARRIVED AT LONDON AIRPORT IN THE EARLY HOURS OF TODAY AND IMMEDIATELY DROVE TO HER FATHER'S HOME.
