  • Description

Exclusive coverage from Ankara, May 29, shows citizens in the Turkish capital avidly reading newspapers for details of the Army's sudden May 27 coup. Badges with pictures of General Gursel, Turkey's new Head of State and leader of the coup, reflected the widespread popularity which greeted the new regime, and crowds in Ankara were even more demonstrative - gathering to cheer and wave to Army officers and troops who helped overthrow the dictatorial Menderes regime.

Among politicians who welcomed Gen. Gursel's success were Mr. Inonu, who heads the opposition Republic People's Party - opponents of the Menderes Government - and Mr. Bolukbasi, another leader of the old opposition.

To show their gratitude for the Army's action in ousting Menderes, crowds assembled for a sacrificial slaughtering of sheep.
