  • Description

President Eisenhower and other high ranking American personalities were on hand April 27 to great King Mahendra Bir Bikram Shah Deva of Nepal as he flew into Washington's National Airport from Honolulu. He was accompanied by his wife, Queen Ratna Rajya Lakshmi Shah.

After inspecting a guard of honour and making a formal speech, the Nepalese King and Queen drove with President Eisenhower into the city, where the Royal couple will spend three days of their fifteen-day official visit to the United States. On May 13 they will continue to visit unofficially until June 1 when they leave for Lisbon, Portugal, to continue their three-and-a-half months World tour.

Chinese Premier Chou En-Lai arrived in Katmandu April 26 for a three-day visit. He will discuss with Nepalese Premier Koirala the question of China's claim to Mount Everest. Together April 27 they flew to the mountain valley of Pekhara, 50 miles west of Katmandu, for talks at a secluded palace in the middle of a lake. Nepal and China are scheduled to sign a "peace and friendship" treaty April 28. Premier Koirala is reported to have made it clear that Nepal will not give China any treaty undertaking that she would not join "any military alliance" which might be directed against China.
