  • Description

IN RESPONSE TO PRESIDENT BOURGUIBA'S CALL FOR NATION-WIDE "PEACEFUL" DEMONSTRATIONS AGAINST CONTINUED FRENCH OCCUPATION OF BIZERTA, MORE THAN 100,000 TUNISIANS PARADED THROUGH TUNIS AUG 19, SINGING PATRIOTIC SONGS AND CHANTING VOWS OF READINESS TO RESUME THE BATTLE FOR BIZERTA, WHERE AN UNEASY TRUCE PREVAILS.

THE RESURGENCE OF TUNISIAN AGITATION FOR THE EVACUATION OF BIZERTA HAS SO FAR FAILED TO AROUSE ANY RESPONSE FROM THE FRENCH GOVERNMENT. THE OFFICIAL FRENCH VIEW IS THAT THE WEEK-END DEMONSTRATIONS WERE CALCULATED TO EXERT PRESSURE ON THE AUG 21 SPECIAL SESSION OF THE UNITED NATIONS GENERAL ASSEMBLY CALLED TO DEBATE THE BIZERTA SITUATION.

FRENCH TROOPS AND TUNISIANS WERE INJURED AUG 19 WHEN STONES AND BOTTLES WERE THROWN DURING DEMONSTRATIONS AROUND THE ARAB QUARTER. NO SHOTS WERE FIRED TO BREAK THE UNEASY TRUCE, BUT FRENCH PARACHUTE TROOPS WERE BROUGHT IN TO HELP MAN THE BARBED WIRE BARRICADES ERECTED IN THE TOWN.
