  • Description

Swiss Ambassador Giovanni Bucher met the press in Rio de Janeiro Yesterday (Sunday), his first day of freedom after his release by Kidnappers. Mr Bucher, who was held hostage for the release of 70 political prisoners, was set free at dawn in a working-class suburb of the city.

The 57-year-old diplomat was seized from his car on December 7 by urban guerrillas of the Revolutionary Popular Vanguard. He was sat free soon after prisoners released by the Brazil authorities had arrived in Chile.

Mr Bucher looked badly shaken as he nervously read a prepared statement. He said his kidnappers were well-educated youths who wore black hoods when they were with him in the small hot room where he was imprisoned.

The provided him with books and records of Bach and Beethoven, he said.

Mr Bucher said that after he had reported to the authorities in Brasilia he would visit the family of Federal Agent Helio Carvalho, who died while attempting to protect him from the kidnappers.
