Background: More than 200 insurgents were killed by air strikes in support of Khmer Government troops engaged in heavy fighting along the road leading to the Khmer Republic's main rice producing area last Monday (30 September).
The fighting was in the Baribaur district about nine miles (15 kms) from the isolated provincial capital of Kompong Chhnang.
Kompong Chhnang is 46 miles (73 kms) north-east of Phnompenh and had been under heavy attack for the previous two weeks, when Government troops had abandoned many positions along Highway 5.
The Khmer Government sent two brigades of infantry and a squadron of armoured cars to the area. On wednesday (2 October) the Khmer High Command claimed its pilots had killed a further 62 insurgents and that both ground and air forces had killed 312 since the air strikes began.
