  • Description

Italian refugees, who have left Libya where the Revolutionary Government has confiscated their property, arrived in Naples on Saturday (I August).

Waiting at the dockside in Naples as the refugees arrived was a large crowd carrying placards welcoming them home. The confiscations, announced by Libya on July 21, were in retaliation for Italy's colonial occupation of the North African country from 1912 to World War Two.

Libya's Italian community is officially estimated to number 18,000 and 116 refugees arrived at the Port of Naples on Saturday.

Six hundred farms are among the properties taken over and a mass evacuation is expected although only a few Italians have managed to leave so far.

The plight of the Italians in Libya and the question of the property confiscations has been raised unofficially at the United Nations with Secretary-General U. Thant. The Italian Government's main concern at the moment is the speedy return to Italy of Italians who want to leave.

On arriving at Naples the refugees were taken to a settlement camp where they will stay temporarily. They will get Government cash benefits to tide them over until they resettle in Italy.
