  • Description

Seven people were killed today (Monday) and more than 20 injured when a French lorry carrying 8,000 gallons (40,000 litres) of liquified gas exploded at the Belgian-Luxemburg border town of Martelange.

The driver of the lorry was missing. Firemen brought the blaze under control after it had gutted about 10 buildings, including the railway station, and destroyed 50 cars.

The blast threw the lorry against a house and showered burning gas over a wide area. Four Dutch tourists in their car were among the dead.

Every ambulance in the area rushed to the scene and at least five of those taken to hospital were seriously hurt.

The lorry blew up as it was crossing a bridge of the River Sure at the River Sure at the border town. Local people said that at first they thought an aircraft had crashed near by.

A petrol station near the bridge burst into flames almost immediately after the explosion and an attendant and his child were badly burned.

Fire also destroyed the ground floor of a nearby cafe but 80 people eating lunch inside escaped unharmed.

Police, who sealed off the Arlon section of the main Brussels-Luxembourg road, said the lorry left Holland early today on its way to Metz, in castern France. Its wheels were found about 100 yards (metres) from the bridge.
