  • Description

While Chinese Premier Chou En-Lai enjoyed a friendly atmosphere during his four-day visit to Burma, Apr 17, trouble was brewing in Delhi-where he is to arrive Apr 19 - as demonstrators marched through the streets of the Indian capital, calling for a "firm stand" in the Indian-China border dispute.

In a protest action called by the Jan Sangh opposition party, demonstrators moved in procession to Nehru's home and left the Prime Minister in no doubt about their viewpoint on the Chinese leader's visit. In answer to Nehru's repeated warnings that people must learn to live with the border dispute, their banners read "Beware of the Chou smile", "No public reception to aggressor Chou En-Lai" and "Did out warriors lay down their lives in vain?". Some placards demanded an unyielding policy, in such unmistakable terms as "No surrender to the Chinese invaders" and "We want peace, but with honour".

Protests lodged by Opposition M.P.s against organising public receptions for the Chinese visitor have already had their effect. During his seven days' stay in Delhi, Chou En-Lai will have only three social engagements. One is a banquet given by Nehru, the second a lunch by the President, and the third a lunch by the Vice-President. And although there is no reason to expect a lack of courtesy in the treatment of the visitor, there seems to be little enthusiasm left for a greet display of cordiality.
