Background: Football, and Tunisia and Nigeria played a goal-less draw in Tunis in their World Cup African qualifying match on Sunday (25 September). Tunisia had a goal disallowed for off-side in the first half. The Nigerians played defensively and used their greater physical bulk to good advantage.

Tunisia are in the red shirts, Nigeria in the green.

As the more lightly-built team, Tunisia rely on speed and neat interpassing. For the first 20 minutes, they looked the better team but couldn't co-ordinate their attacks smoothly. They found the close man-to-man marking of the Nigerians hard to counter.

The Tunisians had to try to keep the ball low and to move it quickly into open spaces because they couldn't match the Nigerians in the air or in physical clashes. But neither team could work the ball close enough to the goalmouth for a worthwhile shot.

Some critics had thought the stronger and heavier Nigerians would wear down the Tunisians. Throughout the game, the visitors flung themselves fiercely into their tackles, and exploited their better heading talent, but the Tunisians did not wilt, as predicted. Play swept back and forth, but it was clear long before the final whistle that the match was destined to be a stalemate. It was the old story of the better teamwork coming from defenders rather than attackers.
