  • Description

The Annual Malaysian Grand Prix for Motor Cars, due to be held at the Batu Tiga Racing Circuit, near Kuala Lumpur, had to be cancelled because of heavy rain.

But the race organisers managed to run the Grand Prix Motorcycle main event. The race attracted a field of more than twenty riders.

Trevor Discombe, of New Zealand, number 35, roared away from the grid on his Yamaha TZ-700 to take the lead. Discombe gained the pole position with some brilliant riding in the practice runs..... and maintained his form throughout the big race.

He was hotly pursued by Graham Kairl, of Australia, number 2, riding a Yamaha TZ-350. Kairl managed to finish third.

All-India Champion, Sheriff Dyan, was an early casualty. He went off the track in the 12 lap and ran smack into a safety barrier. He was taken to hospital with suspected broken ribs.

Discombe covered the 50 lap course in one hour, eighteen minutes.

It was the New Zealander's third successful attempt at the Malaysian Grand Prix, having won the event in 1972 and 1973. This year's win earned him more than a thousand U.S. dollars.
