  • Description

On November I, just one week before General Idi Amin's deadline for the expulsion of Uganda's non-citizen Asians, it appears that all those who have to leave will be out in time.

At the British, Canadian, and United States processing offices in the Ugandan capital of Kampala, the crowds of Asians applying for entry certificates a week or so ago have dwindled to a handful. And, the special office set up by the British High Commission to handle applicants for entry to Britain has now closed.

An estimated 5,000 stateless Asians, who will have to be flown out of the country before the November 8 deadline, are still being processed by the United Nations.

But, just as Uganda was beginning to see the and of the Asian problem, President Amin announced on Monday (30 October) that European-owned farms in Western Uganda would be subject to compulsory purchase by Ugandans from the middle of November.
