  • Description

The logistic ship, Sir Galahad, designed by the Ministry of Transport, for the Ministry of Defence as a fast troop and vehicle carrier, capable of discharging a beach, will be launched on Tuesday, April 9, at the Clydeside yard of Messrs. Alexander Stephen & Son Ltd.

The naming ceremony will be performed by Lady Richardson, wife of the Quarter-Master General, Sir Charles Richardson, K.C.B., C.B.E., D.S.O., B.A.

Sir Galahad will incorporate design features found desirable in the course of two years of operational experience with her sister ship, Sir Lancelot.

She will, for instance, be flush decked, to give her greater flexibility for handling military material on her upper deck. She will be constructed largely of higher tensile steel with a resulting saving in weight.

Her catering facilities will be all on one deck and her main machinery will be capable of control from the bridge.

Otherwise she resembles Sir Lancelot with special stowage arrangements for military vehicles and pontoons and a helicopter platform astern.

A ship of about 6,000 tons, she will be 416 feet overall with a extreme breadth of 60 ft.

There are bow and stern loading facilities for tanks and other vehicles and ramp hatches.

Sir Galahad will be managed for the Army by the British Indian Steam Navigation Co. Ltd.
