  • Description

A hunger strike by workers in Lima, Peru has entered its third week, and indications are that the strikers are not going to give in easily. The strike began on January the 28th with seven workers sleeping on a church floor. These were subsequently joined by another 47 workers, who moved in to various other churches around the city of Lima.

SYNOPSIS: The hunger strike began at Lima's Santo Domingo Church. The workers moved in and made it known that they wouldn't budge or take any food until their demands were met by the Government. They were insisting on three conditions being met: First, re-employment of all the workers fired during the country's state of emergency, second the repatriation of all exiles, and third a general salary increase.

Reuters reported that the current hunger strike in Peru stemmed from an earlier general strike which failed to produce Government concessions in July last year. During the work stoppage, which involved the whole country, the Government refused to yield on any points, and subsequently hundreds of the strikers lost their jobs. At the moment, the situation remains deadlocked.
