  • Description

The two Palestinian guerrillas jailed for life in Turkey on Wednesday (November 16) for killing four people in a raid on Istanbul Airport in August, remained defiant and unrepentant as sentence was passed -- laughing, joking and making V-for-victory signs at the judge.

SYNOPSIS: The two Palestinians were brought in court for sentencing under heavy guard. Earlier, the court heard how Mehti Hohammed Zilh, aged 22, and Hussein Mohammed al-Rashid, 23, threw explosives and opened fire with automatic weapons in a departure hall at Yesilkoy airport. They struck as passengers were going through a final security check before boarding an Israeli El Al flight for Tel Aviv. Four people were killed -- two Israelis, a Japanese, and an aide to United States Senator Jacob Javits. Twenty-two others were wounded. The judge and two assessors found the Palestinians guilty of murder, injury and causing terror, and sentenced them to death. The sentences were immediately reduced to life imprisonment.

The court accepted a plea by Zilh and al-Rashid that they had been acting on behalf of the Palestinian people in its fight for an independent country.

In their final addresses to the court, they admitted their guilt in the massacre but said their actions were part of a continuing struggle by the Palestinian people against 'imperialism and Zionism'. As they left the court Zilh proclaimed 'death to imperialists and to reactionary Arabs. Long live friendly Turkish people.
