  • Description

TWO STAGES TO GO IN THE TOUR DE FRANCE, AND IT LOOKS LIKE PARIS IS ALL SET FOR A THRILLING FINISH ON TUESDAY. AFTER TODAY'S STAGE - THE 20TH OF THE WORLD'S GREATEST AND TOUGHEST CYCLING RACE - FRANCE'S RAYMOND POULIDOR SLASHED THE GAP BETWEEN HIM AND THE OVERALL LEADER, JACQUES ANQUETIL.

POULIDOR FINISHED THIRD -- AND A VALUABLE 33 SECONDS AHEAD OF ANQUETIL, THE FRENCH CYCLING IDOL WHO HAS WON THE RACE FOUR TIMES. BUT TODAY'S TRIUMPHS WENT TO TWO TOUGH SPANIARDS, JULIO JIMENEZ AND FEDERICO BAHAMONTES.

THEY CAME IN FIRST AND SECOND RESPECTIVELY AFTER THE EXHAUSTING AND MOUNTAINOUS 237.5-KILOMETRE RIDE FROM DRIVE TO CLERMONT-FERRAND IN CENTRAL FRANCE. THEY CONQUERED THE HILLY STRETCHES WITH POWERFUL BURSTS, AND NEAR THE FINISH SPRINTED AWAY FROM THE REST OF THE TIRING FIELD.

JIMENEZ RODE INTO THE PACKED CYCLING ARENA AT CLERMONT-FERRAND II SECONDS AHEAD OF BAHAMONTES AND NEARLY A MINUTE AHEAD OF POULIDOR. THE OTHER LEADING RIDERS ALSO BROKE AWAY NEAR THE FINISH, AND NONE OF THE FIRST 10 HAD THE SAME TIME.

AFTER TODAY'S STAGE, ANQUETIL'S LEAD IN THE OVERALL LEADERSHIP WAS CUT TO 14 SECONDS. ANQUETIL FINISHED FIFTH. THIRD, OVERALL, IS BAHAMONTES, FOLLOWED BY HENRY ANGLADE, ANOTHER FRENCHMAN.
