Background: Talks which opened on Wednesday (30 August) between North and South Korea -- the first formal conference between the two Koreas since the second World War - received saturation coverage form news services in the South Korean capital, Seoul. But in the North Korean capital, Pyongyang - where the talks are being held - the meeting has attracted little attention.

South Korean newspapers devoted half of their news space on Wednesday to the talks, and to allied subjects. The two sides were Meeting Pyongyang to discus ways in which divided Korean families could be reunited.

Seven reporters form South Korea attended the meeting - and their stories were filed in a pooled despatch. Meanwhile, the Korean Broadcasting System broadcast the entire meeting live.
