    FIVE STUDENTS WERE ARRESTED AND FOUR OTHERS INJURED WHEN TWO RIVAL GROUPS OF STUDENTS CLASHED YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) AT THE UNIVERSITY OF LAGOS IN NIGERIA.THE CAUSE OF THE AFFRAY WAS THE APPOINTMENT OF A NEW VICE-CHANCELLOR.

    THE TERM OF OFFICE OF THE PRESENT VICE-CHANCELLOR, PROFESSOR ENI NJOKU EXPIRES AT THE END OF MAY, AND DR SABURI BIOBAKU, PRO-VICE-CHANCELLOR OF THE UNIVERSITY OF IFE AT IBADAN HAS BEEN APPOINTED TO TAKE HIS PLACE.

    AFTER THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE NEW APPOINTMENT EARLIER THIS WEEK, THE STUDENTS AND SOME MEMBERS OF THE ACADEMIC STAFF HAVE SPLIT INTO TWO FACTIONS.ONE GROUP BELIEVES THAT PROFESSOR NJOKU SHOULD HAVE BEEN APPOINTED TO THE OFFICE FOR LIFE.THEY HAVE REFUSED TO RETURN TO WORK AND HAVE FORCED A FOUR-DAY CLOSE-DOWN OF THE UNIVERSITY.THEY HAVE BARRICADED THE UNIVERSITY ENTRANCE TO TRY TO STOP THE OTHER GROUP, WHO SUPPORT THE NEW APPOINTMENT, FROM ENTERING THE BUILDING.

    IT WAS DURING ONE OF THESE CLASHES THAT THE RIOT POLICE WERE CALLED.THE UNIVERSITY'S PROVISIONAL COUNCIL HAS CALLED FOR AN END TO THE DISPUTE, THREATENING DISCIPLINARY ACTION IF THE PROTEST IS NOT STOPPED.
