  • Description

ALL OVER WESTERN EUROPE AIRLINES HAVE ANNOUNCED THOUGH MEASURES TO STOP BOMBS BEING PLANTED ON PLANES BOUND FOR THE MIDDLE EAST. THIS FOLLOWS MIDAIR EXPLOSIONS ON SATURDAY (21 FEBRUARY) ABOARD TWO AIRCRAFT TAKING PASSENGERS OR MAIL TO ISRAEL, WHICH COST 47 LIVES, ALLEGEDLY CAUSED BY SABOTAGE.

BRITAIN'S INTERNATIONAL AIRLINES PLACED A TEMPORARY BAN ON HANDLING FREIGHT BOUND FOR ISRAEL, WHILE THOSE OF AUSTRIA, HOLLAND, SWITZERLAND AND FRANCE BANNED MAIL AS WELL AS FREIGHT. BRITISH OVERSEAS AIRWAYS (BOAC) SAID THEIR EMBARGO WILL LAST 48 HOURS WHILE THEY TAKE STOCK. BRITISH EUROPEAN AIRWAYS (BEA) SET NO TIME LIMIT, BUT A SPOKESMAN EXPECTED THE BAN TO BE BRIEF. BOAC HAS NINE FLIGHTS TO ISRAEL EACH WEEK, AND BEA HAS FIVE. THE ISRAELI AMBASSADOR IN LONDON PROTESTED TO THE TWO BRITISH AIRLINES AGAINST THEIR TEMPORARY BAN. HE SAID THE DECISION COULD "ONLY BE INTERPRETED AS A CAPITULATION TO INTIMIDATION AND ENCOURAGEMENT TO CONTINUE AIR PIRACY AND INDISCRIMINATE ATTACKS AGAINST AIRLINES OF ALL NATIONALITIES".

THE SCANDINAVIAN AIRLINES SYSTEM (SAS) HAS HALTED ITS ONCE-WEEKLY COPENHAGEN-TEL AVIV FLIGHT UNTIL IT CAN TAKE THE NECESSARY SECURITY ARRANGEMENTS, ACCORDING TO A SPOKESMAN. IN AMSTERDAM THE KLM AIRLINE, WHICH RUNS THREE TEL AVIV-BOUND FLIGHTS PER WEEK, ANNOUNCED A FREIGHT AND MAIL EMBARGO FOR THE TIME BEING. AIR FRANCE SAID IT WILL CARRY OUT STRINGENT CHECKS ON PLANES LEAVING FOR THE MIDDLE EAST FROM PARIS, WHILE IN ROME X-RAY BAGGAGE CHECKS ARE AMONG PRECAUTIONS ALREADY OPERATED ON FLIGHTS TO THE MIDDLE EAST. IN ZURICH, SWISSAIR HALTED ALL FREIGHT AND MAIL ADDRESSED TO ISRAEL UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE IT WAS A CORONADO OF THE AIRLINE WHICH BLEW UP SHORTLY AFTER LEAVING ZURICH, KILLING ALL 47 ABOARD.

AT MOST AIRPORTS, INCLUDING FRANKFURT MAIN, BAGGAGE IS BEING CHECKED BEFORE IT IS LOADED ONTO AIRCRAFT. AN AIR FRANCE SPOKESMAN SAID IT HAD NOT YET BEEN DECIDED WHETHER PASSENGERS' PERSONAL LUGGAGE IS BEING INCLUDED IN THEIR CHECKS.
