  • Description

DISAGREEMENTS OVER POLITICAL CONTROL OF STUDENTS' UNIONS IN BULGARIA HAVE FLARED UP DURING THE PAST NEW DAYS. IN SOFIA LAST TUESDAY, GHANA STUDENTS DEMONSTRATED IN THE CITY CENTRE IN PROTEST AGAINST A GOVERNMENT BAN ON AN ALL-AFRICAN STUDENTS' UNION. ARMED POLICE BROKE UP THE GATHERING, INJURING SEVERAL AFRICAN STUDENTS, AND THEN HERDING THE MAJORITY INTO BUSES TO TAKE THEN AWAY. REPORTS SAY THAT TRAFFIC WAS BLOCKED FOR FIFTEEN MINUTES DURING THE DISTURBANCES.

TONIGHT (FRIDAY), 20 GHANAIAN STUDENTS FROM SOFIA ARRIVED AT AMSTERDAM AIRPORT EN ROUTE FOR HOME, AFTER THE BULGARIAN EDUCATION MINISTRY OFFERED EXIT VISAS TO ALL AFRICAN STUDENTS INVOLVED IN THE RECENT DISTURBANCES. THEY TOLD REPORTERS THAT ALMOST ALL THE 300 AFRICAN STUDENTS STILL IN BULGARIA WOULD BE LEAVING THE COUNTRY IN THE NEXT FEW DAYS. THEY SAID THAT LAST SUMMER 22 STUDENTS RETURNED TO ACCRA FOLLOWING 'AN OUTBURST OF RACIAL DISCRIMINATION', ALTHOUGH NONE OF THEM WERE EITHER FOR OR AGAINST COMMUNIST PRINCIPLES. ABOUT THE PRESENT DISPUTE, A SPOKESMAN SAID THAT 'PRESUMABLY THE BULGARIAN GOVERNMENT OPPOSED THE UNION'S ARTICLES WHICH SAID THAT A MEMBER OF THE UNION COULD NOT A MEMBER OF THE BULGARIAN GOVERNMENT YOUTH ORGANISATION KOMSOMOL AT THE SAME TIME.'
TROUBLE STARTED A WEEK AGO WHEN TWO STUDENT LEADERS RECEIVED ORDERS FROM THE BULGARIAN GOVERNMENT TO LEAVE THE COUNTRY WITHIN A FEW HOURS. THINS EXPULSION ORDER WAS SUSPENDED FOR THREE DAYS WHILE THE PRIME MINISTER, MR. ZHIVKOV, PROMISED TO RECEIVE A DELEGATION FROM THE STUDENTS. THEIR REPRESENTATIVES ARE SAID TO HAVE WAITED FOR FIVE HOURS, BUT MR. ZHIVKOV DID NOT APPEAR. A COLONEL MET THEM, HOWEVER, AND WARNED THEM NOT TO DEMONSTRATE AGAIN, BUT WHEN A SOMALI STUDENT WAS ARRESTED, THE STUDENTS' LEADERS ONCE MORE MADE REPRESENTATIONS AND THIS TIME WERE THEMSELVES ARRESTED.
