  • Description

THE OIL LIFT TO ZAMBIA THROUGH TANZANIA SET AN ALL-TIME RECORD LAST MONTH. THE MAIN ROUTE FOR FUEL SUPPLIES IS A 1,500-MILE (2,400 KILOMETRE) HIGHWAY FROM DAR-ES-SALAAM TO KAPIRI MPOSHI, ZAMBIA, KNOWN TO LORRY DRIVERS BECAUSE OF ITS HAZARDS AS "HELL RUN."
THE ROAD PASSES THROUGH THE TANZANIAN HIGHLANDS AND DROPS TO THE MASAI PLAIN. THE ROAD IS LASHED BY RAINSTORMS AND SCORCHED BY SUN. SINCE THE FUEL RUN BEGAN A YEAR AGO, MORE THAN 60 MEN HAVE DIED ON IT.

THE OIL LIFT IS THE RESULT OF SANCTIONS AGAINST RHODESIA. UNTIL RHODESIA DECLARED INDEPENDENCE, ZAMBIA OBTAINED ITS OIL FROM A REFINERY NEAR UMTALI. THE ZAMBIAN GOVERNMENT OFFERS SUBSTANTIAL PAYMENT TO LORRY OWNERS PREPARED TO RISK "HELL RUN".

SOMETIMES RAIN OR DUST ON THE ROAD IS SO BAD THAT HEADLIGHTS ARE NEEDED. THE RAIN REDUCES THE ROAD TO MUD. THE LORRIES CHURN IT INTO RUTS AND HOLES. SOME LORRIES GET STUCK IN THE MUD, OTHERS SKID AND CAPSIZES. DRIVERS FALL ASLEEP FROM EXHAUSTION AND CRASH. THE BIGGEST DANGER OF ALL IS THE CARGO. A SPARK -- OR EVEN THE SUN'S HEAT -- CAN EXPLODED THE OIL.

LORRIES THAT BRING OIL INTO ZAMBIA CARRY OUT COPPER. "HELL RUN" HAS THUS BECOME ONE OF THE ALTERNATIVE ROUTES FOR ZAMBIA'S COPPER EXPORTS.
