  • Description

Ethiopia's Emperor Haile Selassie was forced to postpone a ministerial meeting of the Organisation of African Unity on Wednesday (February 27) after troops throughout the country rebelled.

The meeting, to discuss relations between independent African countries and the oil producing countries of the Middle East, was briefly addressed by the Emperor who explained that due to internal national problems the meeting would have to be indefinitely postponed.

Units of the Ethiopian army had rebelled in the city of Asmara, Ethiopia's second largest, early in the week -- but made a radio broadcast confirming their loyalty to the Emperor.

A day after the revolt began the entire eighteen-man Ethiopian Government resigned. In a bid to head off further troubles Haile Selassie named a new Prime Minister, ordered a large pay rise for troops and asked the dissidents to return to their posts.

By Wednesday, troops had taken over vital installations in Addis Ababa and were demanding even stronger reforms from the Emperor.
