Background: Turkey's research ship "Sismik One", which provoked a crisis in relations with Greece by exploring for oil in the disputed Aegean Sea, arrived in the Turkish port of Izmir on Sunday (15 August). The ship received an enthusiastic welcome.

SYNOPSIS: The vessel returned to port after 10 days at sea shadowed by Greek warships. The Turkish Government said no political motives lay behind the ship's return. However, officials agreed her arrived was certain to reduce tensions in the Aegean -- if only until the Sismik sails again.

Crowds gathered to welcome Sismik One as she steamed into port. A long simmering Greco-Turkish dispute over Aegean mineral rights reached a new pitch two weeks ago when the ship began surveys. The Sismik One worked in a part of the Aegean where Greece has rival claims to the continental shelf.

Turkey claimed Greek warships harassed the vessel and protested to Athens. Greece responded by raising the issue at the United Nations and calling the ship's voyage a danger to peace in the Aegean. Meanwhile, United States Secretary of State, Dr. Henry Kissinger, has urged both nations to seek a peaceful settlement of the dispute. Dr. Kissinger said he's concerned to head off a further threat to the southern flank of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.
