  • Description

More than fifty warships of five nations have been assembled during the past week in the Central and Western Mediterranean for the start of a major North Atlantic treaty Organisation exercise - codenamed Eden Apple.

The exercise is designed to test and improve the co-ordination and preparedness of the participating forces. Nations participating include Greece, Britain, Italy, the United States and France.

The French participation is regarded as significant, reflecting French concern at reports the Soviet navy may soon move into the former French naval base, Mers el Kebhir. The French are operating under national command.

The overall command of Eden Apple is held by Admiral Luciano Sotgui of Italy.

The combined exercise, lasting three weeks, will involve surface vessels, submarines and aircraft. Basically, the exercise will be a study in anti-submarine tactics.

The exercise will be held in two phases -- employing offensive and defensive techniques. NATO officials have stated that there had been no Soviet ships sighted so far in the exercise zones, Although there is a record number of Soviet navy vessels now stationed in the Mediterranean.
