Background: King Juan Carlos on thursday (17 February) paid his first visit to the central province of Cuenca since assuming the Spanish throne 15 months ago.
SYNOPSIS: The King, accompanied by Queen Sofia, was greeted by several thousand cheering people in the small town of Tarancon. He promised to pass on to his government requests for aid from the run-down province. The province has the lowest average income per head in the country and the least number of hospitals.
The King told the crowd that in working to improve their future, they would contribute to the development of the whole of Spain. The provincial officials asked the Spanish leader for special attention to increase industry in the largely agricultural province. King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia also visited the provincial capital of Cuenca where they talked to local officials.
