  • Description

The Israeli Prime Minister, Menachem Begin, has said that a peace treaty between his country and Egypt will be ready for signing soon. His optimistic comment came on Thursday (2 November) after a meeting in New York with American Secretary of State, Cyrus Vance.

SYNOPSIS: Before sitting down to discuss final peace treaty issues with Mr. Vance, the Israeli leader, presented the Secretary of State with a small gift. Only last week Mr. Begin, along with President Sadat of Egypt, was joint recipient of a major award -- the 1978 Nobel Peace Prize.

After the presentation the two men, who were joined by Israeli Foreign Minister Moshe Dayan, met for two-and-a-half hours to finalise details of the latest peace treaty talks. These were reported to centre on the latest Israeli plan to expand Jewish settlements on the occupied West Bank. Earlier, this plan had provoked an angry reaction from the Carter administration, and threatened to disrupt Egyptian-Israeli relations. After the meeting, the two men told reporters they had made real progress discussing the few remaining obstacles to peace, and that the final draft could be signed in the near future.
